Andrew Wyeth
Andrew WyethAmerican Painter, 1917 -Andrew Wyeth is perhaps the most popular and the most accomplished twentieth-century American realist painter after Edward Hopper. His career spans from an oil of a man plowing his fields painted in 1933 when he was sixteen, to the present. Andrew Wyeth's art is best known for his realistic and thoughtful paintings of people and places in rural Pennsylvania and Maine. Wyeth's paintings show uncrowded rural scenes that are reminders of earlier American life. His subjects include old buildings with bare windows and cracked ceilings, and abandoned boats on deserted beaches. Often haunting, Wyeth's art portrays the remains of past activity rather than the accomplishments of the present. Andrew Wyeth's art style follows the tradition of Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, two realistic American painters of the 1800's. His work is extremely detailed, almost photographic. Wyeth paints portraits of real people, especially his family and neighbors. He paints in egg tempera, a medium which gives his paintings a smooth, delicate detailed surface. He also uses a watercolor technique called "dry brush." Andrew Wyeth produced art work that became American icons, deepening our sense of the possibilities of representational painting in an abstract age. A final dose of drama was added to Andrew Wyeth's personal life at almost age 70, with the revelation of the "Helga" paintings, sketches, drawings, and portraits (many of them nude) of Wyeth's neighbor, later his companion and assistant, Helga Testorf. Many of Andrew Wyeth's well-known paintings are serene, even gentle; a basket in the sun, or his dog sleeping on his bed. Andrew Wyeth's father, N.C. Wyeth, was a noted illustrator of children's books. Andrew's son James Wyeth is also a painter. Find beautiful framed art prints by Andrew Wyeth. We make buying framed art prints easy and fun!
