In 1989, Vettriano was finally ready to show his works in public. He offered two works to the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition. Both were accepted and sold on the first day. In 1992, three works were accepted by The Royal Academy in London for the Summer Exhibition and later in the same year his first solo exhibition was a sell-out. In November 1999, Vettriano’s work was shown for the first time in New York, when twenty paintings were displayed at The International 20th Century Arts Fair at The Armory. Fifty collectors from the UK flew out for the opening night of the Fair and all twenty paintings were sold out within an hour of the opening.

Vettriano's style has been compared to some of the great realist painters of America and England. His work has been likened to that of Walter Sickert, Edward Hopper and 1940s Hollywood movies.

The aura of Jack Vettriano's alluring paintings is delectably noirish. Vettriano's sexy canvases are like movie stills, freezing a moment of seduction or confrontation. Elegant men and women, armed with cigarettes and cocktails, are painted in vignettes hinting at erotic and dangerous activities, with intimacy lost, betrayal and heartache. Even in his magical plein air compositions, his stylized figures remain wary and self-conscious. Vettriano's interiors—hotel rooms, bordellos, restaurants—depict a strangely lightless light as if the dark deeds of the characters were taking place on a brilliantly sunny day. His exteriors have the flavor of the exotic and forbidden.

Vettriano's popularity has increased so much since his paintings were first exhibited that The Singing Butler, is currently the best-selling poster in the world. Vettriano himself has been described as a cross between Harvey Keitel and Bono, with the toughness and virility of one and the fashionable narcissism of the other.

To date, more than 500,000 posters of Jack Vettriano’s paintings have sold worldwide.
